Values

Code Label Standard code Definition
biological Biological The person who is the genetic origin of the child, without regard to who carried the pregnancy or who holds legal parentage. Covers cases where genetics and gestation coincide in one person, as well as sperm or egg donors whose genetic contribution is legally recognized as parenthood.
gestational Gestational The person who carried and gave birth to the child, regardless of genetic relationship or legal status. Used when gestation and genetic parenthood are held by different people (surrogacy), but may also be used when they coincide. Fills a gap in FHIR RoleCode, which provides GESTM (gestational mother, female-coded) but no gender-neutral gestational code.
adoptive Adoptive A person who has acquired parental rights and responsibilities through a formal adoption order. Applicable in both domestic and intercountry adoption.
