FAO Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) (https://www.fao.org/in-action/voices-of-the-hungry/fies/en/)

Internationally standardized 8-question experience-based scale used by FAO for SDG 2.1.2 monitoring. The four severity levels below are derived from the raw FIES questionnaire responses.

Values

Code Label Standard code Definition
food_secure Food secure The household has reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. None of the FIES conditions are experienced.
mildly_insecure Mildly food insecure The household has experienced uncertainty about obtaining food or has been unable to eat healthy and nutritious food, but has not reduced quantity.
moderately_insecure Moderately food insecure The household has reduced the quality and/or quantity of food consumed. Adults may have skipped meals or gone without eating for a day.
severely_insecure Severely food insecure The household has experienced hunger. Adults have gone without eating for a whole day or more due to lack of resources.
