Identity Document
https://publicschema.org/IdentityDocument
A physical or digital document that asserts one or more identifiers about a party (person, household, or group). Distinct from the identifier itself: the number on a passport is an Identifier; the passport book is an IdentityDocument. Documents have their own lifecycle (issue date, expiry, issuing authority) independent of the identifier value, and the same identifier may appear on successive documents. Distinct from Certificate (a re-issuable extract of a civil-status record under CIEC conventions) and from IdentityCredential (the Verifiable Credential envelope that may attest an IdentityDocument in digital form).

Evidence
Not yet found in mapped delivery systems.
Not modeled as a distinct entity in the mapped systems, which typically embed issue/expiry dates and authority alongside the identifier value. Introduced here to align with Verifiable Credential envelopes and ICAO 9303 document semantics, and to keep Identifier generic for use on non-party entities such as Location.
| Standard | Equivalent | Match |
|---|---|---|
| ICAO Doc 9303 | Machine-Readable Travel Document | broad |
| ICAO 9303 distinguishes the document (passport book) from the number it carries, matching the split between IdentityDocument and Identifier. | ||
| FHIR R4 | DocumentReference | broad |
| FHIR DocumentReference is a generic clinical document reference; IdentityDocument is narrower and focused on documents that bear party identifiers. | ||
